Summer Placement Scheme
Following a successful pilot scheme in 2012 involving 20+ companies and students, the InfoLab21 Knowledge Business Centre and the School of Computing and Communications have launched an industrial placement award scheme that links highly performing students with companies looking for a dedicated ICT resource.
For at least 8 weeks during the summer, students who are accepted onto the scheme are placed with a participating company or in the InfoLab21 Student Academy.
Dates for Summer 2013
The placements will begin week commencing 27th May 2013.
Students apply by end of Week 6 (Friday 16th November 2012)
Companies apply by 30th April 2013.
Projects should be a minimum of 1 month and are typically in the region of 8 weeks.
Companies providing placement opportunities benefit by gaining access to a high calibre, motivated individual with an ICT focused background, to deliver a key piece of hands-on ICT development on behalf of the organisation. It is an excellent opportunity for participating businesses to begin addressing their most pressing ICT concerns.
Participating companies will be expected to make a financial contribution of £1,100/month (~£254 per week) to cover a student bursary and University admin costs plus any potential out of pocket expenses.
How to apply
In the first instance please contact Sarah Mills email@example.com (tel 01524 510421). These positions are limited so interested companies would be encouraged to make early applications. If you have any further questions please get in touch with Sarah Mills.
Participating students get to use and develop skills they have learnt during their course, in an industrial environment, whilst demonstrating their capabilities to prospective employers.
Students will be involved in ICT projects in which they can apply the skills they have been learning during their studies in an industrial setting. Students who gain a placement on this scheme will get a bursary of £1,000/month (~£230 per week) (plus any potential out of pocket expenses).
Several of the placement projects undertaken over the last few years have resulted in participating students being offered employment within host organisations; an achievement which has benefited all parties significantly.
Who can apply
All 2nd, 3rd year or MSci SCC students who have had at least a 2.1 in their previous academic year and who have continuously performed well throughout their current year can apply. Exceptions may be made for special cases if the students can demonstrate their capability.
Students who apply for the placement MUST also attend a series of 5 events/workshops (on Wednesdays in Week 10, Week 13, Week 16, Week 19 and Week 24) in preparation for the placements.
