ICT Job Shop Succeeds Despite the Credit Crunch

Since InfoLab21 launched their new ICT JobShop last autumn there have been many interactions between InfoLab21 students and companies. Despite the credit crunch, 19 Companies have posted jobs on the site and 5 organisations have successfully recruited IT students/graduates through the ICT JobShop. The first organisation was Lancaster University's Information Systems Services Department (ISS). ISS is the University's central IT service department, comprising of around 125 staff.

Chris Dixon, Head of Operations (ISS) used the ICT JobShop to fill a short term position of Service Desk Engineer to cover sick leave. He needed someone with both theoretical and practical IT skills, as well as a good knowledge of the University and ISS.

Within a few weeks Chris had a lot of responses back and was able to shortlist down to 4 good candidates. He found that the ICT JobShop provides flexibility and choice without too much paperwork and made the recruitment process much easier than normal. It also helps focus on exactly what you need using the skills section.

Finally he selected a student from InfoLab21's Computing Department, James Fraser, whose broad studies fitted in well with the role and he had relevant experience as well as experience of working at the University.

ICT Job Shop Launch

Following ongoing demand from our Associate Companies, InfoLab21 has launched the interactive ICT Job Shop which is aimed directly at ICT based students and graduates at Lancaster University and digital companies in the Northwest. This is a brand new service and we hope that it will result in students gaining worthwhile and relevant employment and employers finding a valuable member of staff, whether that is on a part-time temporary basis or a full-time graduate post.

The InfoLab21 ICT Job Shop allows employers to take on new staff on a small project, see if they fit the team and develop a partnership with the student which may lead to full time employment after they graduate. By using the InfoLab21 Job Shop, employers provide opportunities for young people who are keen to gain experience, develop and apply their skills in the workplace, helping to retain these key skills for the region.
