In order to strengthen our delivery capability in ICT solutions, we were
joined in the Knowledge Business Centre on 4 January by Paul Okanda. Paul
is about to complete his Doctorate in the Computing Department and will
be applying his expertise in distributed systems to projects involving network
support. Other members of the technical team are Stewart Kember who focuses
on application development and Rob Jones, a graduate from the Department
of Communication Systems who joined the team in Summer 2005 and has been
concentrating on web site development. Two more graduates are about to be
recruited so that we can start building the Graduate Academy.
Lancaster University has won a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Higher & Further Education for the extensive regional broadband networks rolled out by its Information Systems Services Directorate.
The Prize for Connecting the Last Mile: the Largest Regional Rural Broadband Network for Education in Europe was announced at a special ceremony at St James’s Palace on 17th November and will be presented by Her Majesty The Queen, at an honours ceremony at Buckingham Palace in mid-February. Lancaster University’s Director of Information Systems Services John Gallagher said:
“The enduring achievement of the project is that through the partnership with Lancashire County Council and Cumbria County Council and others, we now have a public-sector owned and managed asset that delivers very high quality, high-speed broadband at low cost to its end-users.”

Following the success of our networking breakfasts during 2005, we are going to hold them more regularly in the coming year. Our first bacon butty bonanza will be on Wednesday 22 February (starting at 8.45 am). Join us for breakfast and take the opportunity to network with other businesses from the ICT sector. The extra benefit of networking breakfasts at InfoLab21 is the opportunity to meet members of our academic staff, find out more about their areas of interest and expertise and exchange ideas. The UK's online retailers experienced a bumper Christmas, according to market researcher Actinic. Small online businesses reported an increase in turnover of 80% during November and December, compared with the same period in 2004. Although the average order value remained roughly the same as last year, sales volume increased dramatically. Actinic believes that because the use of e-commerce technology is still not widespread, there may be more demand for online shopping than supply.
