InfoLab21 researchers have been to Vienna to deliver the first of a series of workshops for Telekom Austria (TA), funders of a project on Resilient Next Generation Networks (NGNs). The project highlights the important role InfoLab21 is playing in the future of big technology-led businesses like TA through research and Knowledge Transfer. In the near future, experts from TA will be visiting InfoLab21 to give a presentation on their successful trial of User Generated Content.
InfoLab21 is leading an international research network which could shape the way in which we use our mobile phones in the future. Mobile games researcher Dr. Paul Coulton is leading the Nokia Mobile Experiences Group which explores new uses for mobile phones which go way beyond just texting, phoning and taking photographs. He said: "People are in the habit of texting and phoning people on the move, creating a little cyber bubble around them where ever we go. We are interested in looking at other ways of using existing and emerging mobile technology in a more sociable way, to bring people together with their immediate environment and the people around them."
Lancaster University is excited to be part of a team of leading research and industrial partners developing a new approach to distributing television across the Internet. P2P-Next, a pan-European conglomerate of 21 industrial partners, media content providers and research institutions has received a €14 million grant from the European Union. Dr. Nicholas Race of the Computing Department based at InfoLab21 says, "Lancaster's role within the P2P-Next project is to deliver this new technology to real users as part of a large-scale technical trial, known as a Living Lab."
A competition for the funding of collaborative research and development in innovative technology is being held by the Technology Strategy Board (TSB). The TSB is a business-focused organisation dedicated to promoting technology-enabled innovation across the UK. They welcome projects that will exploit existing technologies in new or innovative ways alongside truly new or incremental developments. The competition is open to collaborative projects between UK based companies and universities/research organisations.
InfoLab21 associate company Penrillian has won a prestigious regional export award following international growth of their business and creation of new jobs.
Lancaster University is now a member of the Athena 'SWAN' Charter and have been invited to apply for an award.
