New Kendal ICT Cluster Group

The ICT Cluster Group section of our website and been expaned to include a new group for Kendal. Awards Recognition For EduNation Ltd

InfoLab21 resident company EduNation Ltd have been highlighted in two major ICT sector awards for their innovative tutor-matching website, First Tutors. Managing Director Anita Moss says, "These nominations demonstrate that a small team can really challenge a market with the right idea and we're very excited about now moving into applying our expertise to client solutions."

SMART Online Demos From Escendency

InfoLab21 resident company Escendency has created some online demo's of their SMART (Strategy Mapping and Reporting Technology) system. Director Mark Robinson explains, "We often get requests for demonstrations of various parts of the system so we thought we'd create a video library for people to view in their own time." The demos are now available on their website.

First Prize for Mobile Phone Developers

Researchers at InfoLab21 won first prize in a competition at the 2nd European Near Field Communication (NFC) developers summit in Monaco. The winning project uses NFC technology to allow mobile phone handsets and public information screens to share display space, overcoming the screen size limitations of mobile phone displays.

Industry Funding for Next Generation Mobile Interaction

InfoLab21 researchers are collaborating with NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs to develop a new generation of mobile interactions and applications using RFID/NFC technology. MULTITAG is a €252,000 research project funded by NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs - an affiliated company of NTT DoCoMo, the primary mobile communications company in Japan. The two-year project will be the first cooperation between NTT DoCoMo Euro-Labs and a University in the UK.

Students Demo Public Display System: iScreen

Students on ICT Focus' Certificate in Systems and Network Programming (CSNP) successfully demonstrated their group project at InfoLab21 on 23rd April. They presented a public display system aimed at presenting department-specific and institution-wide information such as videos, web pages, and presentations. iScreens can be managed via an administration interface developed by the students.

Inaugural Doug Shepherd Memorial Lecture

One of the world's leading experimental computer scientists, Professor Mahadev Satyanarayanan, will give the inaugural Doug Shepherd Memorial Lecture on May 20th. The lecture will focus on Diamond - a new system for data exploration that is likely to be of interest to a wide cross section of the scientific community. Diamond is an open-source software platform for interactive data exploration that has been jointly developed by Intel Research and Carnegie Mellon.

Lancaster 8th In UK For Computer Sciences & IT

Lancaster University has been ranked 8th in the country for Computer Science and IT in the Guardian's University Guide 2009. InfoLab21, ICT Centre of Excellence, houses the Computing and Communication Systems Departments which have a long and successful history of working with international ICT companies including major telecommunications network operators, equipment manufacturers and software providers such as Microsoft, BT Labs, Orange, Cisco, and Nokia.

Firefly: LEDs With Attitude

Prof. Alan Dix of the Computing Department presented "Firefly: LEDs With Attitude" at a two day knowledge transfer event at De Montford University in March on Investigating 3D and Projection Displays. The event brought together academics and industry in the field of 3D Lighting.

Going Global: 'Developing And Researching Export Markets'

UK Trade and Investment and the British Council have joined together with the Centre for Employability Enterprise and Careers (CEEC) at Lancaster University to offer an event for businesses looking to research and expand their knowledge of how to trade in overseas markets and how to source low-cost (and free) assistance.

'Mentoring For Business' Lunch

Businesses are invited to attend a lunch on 15th July 2008 to meet Lancaster University researchers. The lunch provides an informal forum for business people with experience of recruiting staff to talk to researchers about their career history, what employers value in employees, and likely opportunities in their business or business area.
