In business with InfoLab21
Carl Spencer, Managing Director of Ultima Thule Technology Ltd, based in a
business unit in InfoLab21, has been impressed with the way the University have
been helping him develop innovative software and expand his business. Recently a
team of LU Students from Computing, Management and Communications Systems
Departments have been working in his office to analyse the market and construct
the technical prototype for his new automated business intelligence system. He
said: "We were attracted to relocating firstly to access links with the
University. The move to InfoLab21 has brought lots of benefits ranging from
networking opportunities to sharing ideas and access to research expertise. The
move has given us an improved working environment and it has boosted the
company’s credibility."

InfoLab21 Events Programme
September is rapidly approaching and the events programme will be back in
full swing after the summer break.

Networking for Business Breakfast on Wednesday 7
September (starting at 8.45 am), where businesses and academic staff get the
chance to highlight new developments, exchange ideas and enjoy a bacon
butty!
Broadband Technologies is September’s 'Talking
Technology' event on Wednesday 28 September (5.30 – 7 pm). Professor Barry
Forde and Dr Nick Race will talk about the exciting developments they are
currently working on!
About the Speakers:
Professor
Barry Forde is Deputy Director of the ISS department at Lancaster University.
ISS plays a vital role in providing Internet connectivity and services to many
organisations and academic institutions around the North West of England. They
provide the infrastructure for CLEO, Cumbria Lancashire Education Online.
Lancaster University is also the first University in the United Kingdom to hold
a telecommunications license. As a result, ISS now have the ability to install
equipment within BT telephone exchanges within the region, and control the local
loop circuits out to homes and businesses known as Local Loop Unbundling (LLU).
Dr Nicholas Race leads the Network Research and Special Projects Unit at
Lancaster University - his work includes the Wray Village project. Researchers
at Lancaster were keen to discover how wireless technology performs in remote,
rural environments so when they heard of the village’s campaign to get on line
they decided to offer wireless broadband to the village as a free service and
use the network as a research test bed. Now the village has secured broadband
coverage they have formed a new organisation – The Wray Community Communications
Group - which is exploring ways of ensuring the technology is sustainable and
rolling broadband coverage further out to farms and hamlets beyond the
village.

BCO Award Visit
Representatives from InfoLab21 and Faulkner Brown, the architects of
InfoLab21, met with judges from the British Council for Offices in July. The
building has beaten off competition from the whole of the north of England
(including Scotland) to be one of two buildings in the Northern Region
shortlisted in the corporate workplace category. The judges enjoyed an extensive
tour of InfoLab21 and were keen to ask questions about it, particularly its
links with businesses, as in order to win the award the building must
demonstrate that it is not purely an academic centre. InfoLab21 is the only
Higher Education building being nominated and is up against corporate buildings
from all over the U.K.

Marketing workshops for Cumbrian businesses
The Institute for Entrepreneurship at Lancaster University's Management
School is running a new programme for SMEs in the North West called Marketing
Survival and Growth, in association with Business Link. A series of four
Workshops will cover Understanding your Market, Communicating with
your Market, Branding & the Web and Selling to your
Market.
In Cumbria, workshops will be held on Tuesday mornings (9-1)
throughout September at The Plough at Lupton (about 1.5 miles from Junction 36
of the M6), commencing Tuesday 6th September and are free of charge. Candidates
will be expected to commit to attending all four workshops and early application
is advised as demand is likely to be high.

Mini mission to Czech Republic and Poland
The International Trade Centre for Greater Merseyside and Business Link
Lancashire are offering ICT businesses the opportunity to develop their business
by trading with the Czech Republic and Poland. Czech Republic is arguably the
most ICT developed country within the EU State. This, coupled with a stable and
prosperous economy, certainly makes it an attractive location for anyone wishing
to develop their business across Central Europe. The Polish Government is
beginning to develop an e-Government strategy and as such a number of large IT
contracts are in the pipeline. This mini mission will depart from Manchester
airport on Sunday 23 October, returning Friday 28 October. The cost will be
approximately £700.

1st Agile North Conference
A group of North West based software developers have come together to promote
their passion for Agile Software development. This one day conference takes
place on 13 September 2004 at the Harris Park Conference Centre, Preston and
will provide a forum for learning, sharing, improving and building local support
networks.
