Announced on 4th October at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London to 1,500 industry representatives, InfoLab21 won the national British Council for Offices best corporate work place prize, beating off competition from the BBC amongst others. This is the first time that a university building has won the award. The judges commented:
“This research centre makes a bold and unusual statement. But that was exactly the brief: a beacon to attract top class ICT firms to come and partner University staff in a showpiece for the region, as well as for the University campus.”

He has a strong interest in systems management and security and has provided the following outline for his talk.
During this presentation we will explain that to ensure that your network assets are suitably protected from threats; you need to stop thinking of ‘security’ as a succession of fixes to be applied and adopt a holistic approach. We will:
• Examine the trade-offs that security measures invariably
bring with them
• Introduce the defense in depth mode
• Talk about some of the things that people do that do not improve
security
• Give advice on creating a security policy
These events are free of charge and open to all, for further information or to reserve a place contact Jane Johnson on 01524 510443 or j.johnson4@lancaster.ac.uk
If you are visiting the University in the coming weeks, why not take a journey with a difference? Metamorphosis opened on 15th October in the Lancaster University underpass - a main thoroughfare for university traffic including buses.
The exhibition takes the form of a large audio-visual installation - an animated film of a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis is projected across three large screens and is accompanied by a bespoke sound track. What sets this exhibition apart from other installations is the experience is entirely controlled by the flow of traffic in the underpass. Multiple hidden sensors scattered around the underpass register any movement in the exhibition space sending coded messages to the audio-visual equipment. For example if a vehicle approaches the butterfly projected across the screen, the butterfly will appear to become afraid and fly back into its chrysalis.
A computing collective - known as .:thePooch:. - based in the University's ICT research, development and business centre InfoLab21 has been working with Ulverston-based celebratory arts centre Welfare State International to produce the exhibition.

Fresh figures from web analysts Netcraft suggest that 2005 has been the strongest year ever for Internet growth. A total of 17.5 million new hosts or websites have been launched this year, surpassing the figure recorded during the dotcom boom in 2000. Netcraft attributed the surge to more small firms creating websites, and said that the growth of blogging has also been an important factor. However, spoofed websites set up by spammers have also played a part.
Netcraft's findings are summarised at:

Microsoft has warned that the 'boom era' of the Internet could be at risk unless action is taken to improve security, reduce fraud and tackle spam, the Observer reports. The current levels of viruses, scams and unsolicited e-mails could make the Internet "unusable" by destroying trust in e-commerce, say Microsoft's security expert and former FBI special agent Ed Gibson.
