BP's Chief Technology Officer at InfoLab21

InfoLab21 was visited by Michael Haley, Chief Technology Officer at BP who gave a talk on about BP's use of wireless sensor networks. Lancaster University currently works with BP in the context of two projects: Cobis and NEMO. Both projects are in the area of ubiquitous computing and wireless sensor systems. The goal is to research techniques for integrating computing technology into physical objects such as tools, goods and products. The particular application focus is health and safety monitoring in industrial work environments.

InfoLab21 Featured In Celebration of North West Excellence

InfoLab21 was featured at 'The European Approach - Celebrating North West Excellence' event at the Reebok Stadium in Bolton. The aim of the event was to showcase examples of projects that have been exceptional at incorporating the cross cutting themes of 'Equal Opportunities' and 'Information Communication Technology and Sustainable Development'. The Key Note speech was delivered by North West MEP Arlene McCarthy Chair of the International Market and Consumer Protection Committee who highlighted the significant and positive impact European Funding has had on the North West region.

InfoLab21 Events Programme - Talking Technology

The first event for 2006 took place on Wednesday 22nd February: Paul Coulton, Reuben Edwards and Phil Garner from Communication Systems gave a short demo of their mobile/RFID applications including the popular PAC-LAN version of the PAC Man game.

Other presenters on the day included Joe Finney and Gerd Kortuem from the Computing department. Joe Finney presented his research on mobile applications such as the renowned GUIDE, the Real Tournament and the wireless public access infrastructure for supporting next generation mobile IPv6 applications using a modified mobile IPv6 protocol stack.

Gerd Kortuem gave a presentation on a multi-disciplinary research project Networked Embedded Models and Memories of Physical Network Activity NEMO.
This was our most well-attended event and has created many positive networking relationships. Thank you to all those who were involved.

There will be more information from the KBC Business Development Team on forthcoming Technology Talking events in next month's issue of InfoTextX.

Training Opportunities!

ICT Focus offers the EC Council “Certified Ethical Hacking” course (CEH)

ICT Focus is set to become an approved training centre for the EC Council’s Certified Ethical Hacker training and will be delivering the first course in InfoLab21 in July. As such they will be one of only 8 centres in the UK currently allowed to deliver the course and the only one in the North-West.

The 5-day CEH course, aimed at security auditors, IT security professionals, systems administrators (or anyone who is concerned about the integrity of the network infrastructure) differs from most security courses in that it teaches how to defend network & systems against hacking by looking in depth at how hackers work. Rather than focussing on security audits, the course gives plenty of hands-on experience of attacking systems. By immersing the delegates in the tools and tricks of the “hacking” trade, they learn how to secure their systems & networks against them. The intensive course covers over 300 tools in some detail, and delegates can go on to join a world-wide community of "Ethical Hackers" and keep up to date with the latest tools & technologies.
