Project Firefly - Lighting Up Lancaster

One area InfoLab21’s academics specialise in, and the source of the latest commercialisation project, is ubiquitous computing. This may sound complicated, but the concept is actually quite simple. Computers are ubiquitous- that is, all around us, in our lives and our daily routines. Computers are becoming more embedded into objects that we use everyday- phones, cookers, cars etc, and by embedding technology into existing products it is possible to create new products. Project Firefly involves two academics from InfoLab21’s Computing Department who have chosen a simple item, a fairy light, and have given it a “technological upgrade” by embedding a tiny computer, creating the next generation of Fairy lights. This innovation will potentially revolutionise lighting displays like the Blackpool Illuminations and have great potential for advertisers.
