Cloud computing is one of the most significant developments in computing in the last decade. Most attention has been focussed on areas such as open data and its support for eGovernment or data analytics in eCommerce. This talk will provide an introduction to cloud computing and why it is so significant.

Most importantly, the talk will examine how cloud computing can provide support for modern scientific endeavour, in particular, offering the catalyst for a more integrative 'big' science as required by challenges such as climate change.
