OFCOM Director Becomes New Chairperson For InfoLab21 Advisory Group

InfoLab21 is delighted to announce that Prof. William Webb, Head of Research and Development for Ofcom: Office of Communications has agreed to chair the InfoLab21 advisory group. Prof. Webb, who described InfoLab21 as an "important venture," takes over from Patrick MacDonald, Director of Key Technologies at the DTI, who is changing roles.

Prof. Webb is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, an honour reserved for the UK's highest achievers in the field of science and technology.

The Royal Academy of Engineering describes William Webb as "an internationally respected engineer who has had significant influence on the world of mobile radio, leading standardisation processes and wireless implementation strategy in government and industry. He is particularly noted for his experience and ability to apply his skills to the academic, industrial and governmental sectors."

Professor Webb, also head of Ofcom's research and development team, is responsible for guiding Ofcom's approach to new technologies. He is the author of the Spectrum Framework Review which received widespread support for its proposal to adopt a market-led approach to spectrum management.

Previously, Professor Webb worked for a range of communications consultancies advising on hardware design, computer simulation, propagation modelling, spectrum management and strategy development. Professor Webb also spent three years providing strategic management across Motorola's entire communications portfolio. He has a first class honours degree in electronics, a PhD and an MBA.
